Google has confirmed it is working on a long-requested Gmail feature that will allow users to change their email address while keeping the same Google account. This addresses a major limitation that forced users to abandon accounts or juggle multiple inboxes just to get a better email name.
According to Google, the feature is still in development and will not apply to every type of Gmail address right away. Some legacy and region-specific Gmail accounts may have limitations, and rollout timing may vary.
We regularly see customers stuck with old Gmail addresses created years ago — often with nicknames, numbers, or outdated names — because changing them meant losing email history, contacts, and access to services.
